The church of Santa Maria in Castagnolo stands on the edge of the town of Lastra a Signa, on the road to Sant’Ilario and San Romolo.
Originally situated near Ponte di Stagno, it was moved to its current location in the 1930s.

The coat-of-arms of the Albizi (now displayed in the Museum of Sacred Art of San Martino in Gangalandi) could once be seen on the facade of this church, bearing witness to the family’s ancient patronage. The triptych by Bicci di Lorenzo (c. 1430) – Madonna Assunta che dà la cintola a San Tommaso tra santi (the Virgin Mary dropping the Holy Belt from the sky to Saint Thomas the Apostle) – was probably commissioned by this family.
On nearby Via Madonna della Tosse there is an 18th-century tabernacle built around a late-14th-century fresco of The Madonna and Child with Saints.
