The Portone di Baccio was built on the south-west side of the walls of Lastra a Signa. A defensive structure as well as a city gate, it opened onto the street that ran north-south inside the fortified hamlet.
The Portone di Baccio was the main access to the village. Planned with perfect geometric proportions, this 22.3-meter-high city gate was the most imposing and austere.
Over the centuries it served many purposes, from watch tower to prison in the 18th century.
It is the best preserved of the city gates, although the inner facing is missing. Restored in 2008, its imposing appearance today welcomes visitors who enter Lastra’s historic centre.
